Nina Bell

Nina Bell was every inch a fighter pilot’s daughter — slender, athletic and looking even taller than her 5 feet, 8 inches. Born in the Netherlands, the first stop in a nomadic Air Force childhood, she grew up confident, smart, 'the It girl,' as a friend once put it. A bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Colorado at Boulder led her to become a manager of information systems and, most recently, into project management.

But to her friends and family, there was also the side that was not all business. Ms. Bell’s notebook had a bumper sticker that read, 'Mean People Suck.' With her brother, Lowell Bell, 40, she kept up a private banter, sometimes based on the dim Canadian duo, the Mackenzie brothers, from the 1970’s television show, 'Second City TV.' 'Hey, hoser,' she would call him.

This September, Ms. Bell, 39, had settled in Manhattan, in a new apartment on the Upper East Side and in a new job as a project manager with Marsh & McLennan. In an e-mail message to her friend Lorraine Davis on Monday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m., Ms. Bell wrote, 'I am so very happy.'

Dear Friends and Family of Nina, As yet another September 11th graces our calendars, I find myself reflecting on the memories and the indelible mark that Nina left on all of us. Her memory, far from dimming with the passage of time, continues to shine brilliantly in the hearts and minds of those fortunate enough to have known her. I extend my sincerest blessings to Nina. May God's grace envelop them in eternal peace and happiness. To Nina's family and friends, may tranquility and solace be yours as we collectively remember a remarkable Woman whose impact defies the confines of time. Warm regards, Greta Wilson Alumnus, University of Colorado

Nina wrote a song called “almost a rainbow”. I don’t have a copy and can’t remember her lyrics, but I remember how she sang the chorus and the melody and I could probably hum it for you... That’s how I got the chance to meet her. I was trying to “break into the music business” and Nina was a friend of a mutual friend who by chance introduced us thinking maybe we could musically hit it off. Which I am sure he terribly regretted afterwards. I want to say I got to know Nina for about two years and that was nowhere near enough. But in the short time we spent getting to know one another, I would like to think she and I grew closer. I remember I would talk with her on the phone for hours at times about all sorts of things… Maybe I am exaggerating and it was less than hours, maybe because I was younger and deep down, I liked Nina more than just as a friend but never found the courage to take it beyond friends. I also think because I was young and stupid and she was smart enought to know that I was young and stupid, She had a soft spot for me. I just remember always feeling great around her. Always feeling fun, welcome and warm. I remember talking on the phone in one of our conversations about technical support stuff too. Unfortunately music was not a very successful venture, so my day job was in lower level tech support and at the time I had just started a new job, Nina was like the “go to” IT support staff member at her job at Philip Morris which she despised working for. Anyway, you have to remember, this was the pre ipod age. It was a time when most folks were struggling to keep up with differentiating between logging into their computers versus their email accounts. I remember she once said “yeah most people have the I-D-10-T virus.” to which I responded “what’s that?” thinking I knew something about current viruses. “Got a pen or pencil? Write it down” she said, so I grabbed a pen, read it out aloud to myself and wrote it down: ID10T which I finally realized spelled: idiot. “Stupid…” I said under my breath… and we shared a wonderful laugh together. Nina inspired me so much that I was caught up in my own quest to land a better job which I managed to do, but I hadn’t spoken to Nina in a few weeks leading up to 9/11. so I didn’t know she started a new job let alone looking for one. The day after, Nina’s voicemail was just filled up… I found out weeks later that it was just her second week at Marsh Mclennan, and that she was so excited about her new job that she wanted to make sure she went in early to make an impression, which is the same spirit that left too soon, the same spirit who wrote a song called “almost a rainbow”. She was always so smart and she was always so wonderful to me, I never told her, but I loved her, I could’ve used her help countless times in the last twenty years and I have more stories I can share but I will keep them to myself, I promise that she had a significant impact on me and I miss her very, very much.

I went to high school in Colorado Springs with Nina, and wouldn't join Mercer until 2015. I still vividly remember that day, and finding out the following morning that a high school classmate had been lost in the attack. Not a year goes by without thinking of those souls lost, and how it impacted all of us. RIP Spartan!

I first met Nina when we both worked for The Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles back in the 80's She was an amazing friend and co-worker. Then,a few years later she moved up to the Bay Area and worked with HIS (Hotel Information Systems) like I did. She went on to bigger and better things leaving California and moving to New York years later. Such a loss when 9/11 happened. She was a great human being who brought so much joy to this world of ours. She will always be missed!

Remembering you tonight and tomorrow Nina. The fun times in Duluth, Minn., sliding down the hill on our snow-saucers and playing with your brother Lowell Jr..... R.I.P. and know that you're not forgotten. Nina's father, Lowell Bell, flew with my father in the 11th Fighter Interceptor Squadron in 1966-68, and all us kids were friends and we all went to school together, and gathered on the flightline to watch our dad's take off and land their F-106s. Her dad dressed as Santa Claus one Christmas and taxi'd up to us all and climbed out of a F-106 with a big bag of toys and climbed down the ladder and handed them all to us. My father passed away in 2009 but still spoke with Nina's father after she was taken from us too soon. I post your story every year Nina and will till I join you and my parents in the great Officer's Club in the sky. <3 you.

So relieved I found this page today. I worked with Nina at TIAA CREF for a few years before she accepted the Marsh job offer. There was so much more to her than her profession. Her own way of thinking. She was a THINKING person, with a great heart. Wrote poetry. Original and true to herself, sophisticated yet very modest. After all these years, I was not sure many people remembered her, this site proves quite the contrary. She cannot be forgotten.

I was so fortunate to adopt my dog Bell last summer from the TSA. I don't know if Nina's family is aware that the TSA names all of the explosive detection dogs they train after 9/11 victims. I would love for them to meet Bell someday. She is a wonderful pet and has been a real lifesaver to me since my husband passed away. I think of Nina with fondness even though we've never met. I think she would be happy to know that Bell carries her name.

I visit this page now & then, as I only found out about it a few years ago. Nina was my friend way back in 1st grade, in Mrs. Williams’s class at Hermantown Elementary School while her father & family were stationed at the Duluth facility. I remember her and how sad I was when she moved. She came to my birthday party and I still remember when her father, in his flight suit, came to pick her up! He was so handsome and authoritative. My thoughts & memories of Nina continued, even though I was so young, she remained an important part of my memories. I was stunned to find out about Nina… I wish I had some resonate and eloquent words to express my thoughts & share my sympathies, however it seems all I can share is… I remember Nina, I have fond memories of Nina and she was one of my first true friends, in my young life of feelings. I think of her on this anniversary, but remember her always in my cherished thoughts inside me… Thoughtfully, Jodi Bloom

I worked with Nina at her job prior to the position she took in the WTC. I worked in the IT department, so our involvement was minimal, but always a great story. The day she was leaving TIAA-CREF, she accidentally launched a virus into the server system, and was extremely distraught over, what seemed to be, the intent to destroy before her departure. A wonderfully sweet woman, who was so memorable, even having only met her a couple times - she needed IT help quite a bit :) It's incredibly sad that she was only working for a week in her new position when this all happened. A position that she told her former co-workers was a dream, and made her incredibly happy. I always find some solitude in the fact she reached a moment of happiness in her life - some people never find that, no matter how long they live. RIP Nina.

I remember Nina as a colleague and friend from our Inter.Continental days. We had a connection right from the start....she had lived in my native country, the Netherlands, as a kid. Our familys freindship began back in the mid 60's with the entire Bell family when we purchase a Volkswagon Beetle from them in our hometown of Duluth Minnesota. There was something extremly likeable about the entire family and all of us on both sides became fast friends. Even to this day although now somewhat sparse we still find the occasional time to call. Gods best to the entire family.

As the 5 year anniversary approaches in a few days I'm brought back in time when Nina worked along side me back for a Hotel Software Company called Hotel Information Systems (HIS) in the Bay Area just outside of San Francisco. Nina was bright, intelligent, witty and very charmming. I look back on those days and knew this young lady would go very far in her career. Everyone knew exactly where they were and what they were doing on that dreaded morning of September 11th, 2001. Living in the Bay Area at that time I would have never guessed that I would have known someone working in the Twin Towers in New York City. But, Nina's career took off and she had found her calling. To Nina and her family, May God Always Be By Your Side. Michael Fox

Nearly 5 years after that horrific day, and it still has the power to tear out one's heart. I just today discovered the loss of Nina. Her older brother Lowell ('Dutch' to family and friends)was my best friend in high school. Nina, his bratty sister who had the world in her hands. I'm deeply saddened by this loss, for her family, her friends and her co-workers. She will be missed. But I know in my heart she has simply gone ahead so that our entry into heaven will be greeted with her never ending smile. God Bless you Mom, 'The Colonel', Debbi and Dutch

Nina worked for me at the job prior to Marsh & McLennan. I used to kid her when she first started to work for me because of her '60's' type dress and the fact she was so persistent about trying to change our corporate world. I was sad when she did take the job at Marsh but I did know that this was a great opportunity for her. Nina besides being an employee was also a good friend. Miss her often especially her smile.

Nina came to Marsh to head my group. I was a bit anxious and curious about this 'new boss'. However, from our first meeting, she knew how to put my mind at ease. She was very receptive, intelligent and confident, and I could immediately see her competence. I knew I would learn a lot from her, and I was already looking forward to the exciting path ahead. Later on, I found out that she liked dogs and that she had lived abroad, as I had. She also showed us how quickly and effectively a person can come up to speed on a great number of issues and processes. She was impressive. I am grateful for the short time that we had with her.

Prior to joining Marsh, Nina and I both worked together at our previous employer. I still remember, how by chance we met and had lunch doing her last weeks before she was going on vacation and returning to start her new job at Marsh. She was excited about her new job, and I thought she would do very well and go far! In the office she was a very private and serious lady, yet once you got to know her, she was very intelligent, humorous and someone you wanted on your team.
