Family Tribute:Dear Joanne,

I will never forget you.

Joanne Rubino: A Mother’s Dream

Hers was a life of simplicity and devotion. She worked, she came home, and she took care of her mother.

Austere, perhaps, but Joanne Rubino never made it seem that she was missing anything important.

'My Joanne really was happy being how she was,' said her mother, Antoinette. 'She wasn’t asking for much in life.'

Besides heading to her office in the tax department of Marsh & McLennan for more than 20 years, Ms. Rubino, 45, rarely left her mother. On weekends they went to crafts shows. In the fall, they drove through upstate New York, enjoying the scenery, the fresh air, and each other’s company.

'I used to tell her, `Every mother should have a daughter like you.’ ' said Mrs. Rubino, 74. 'So thoughtful, and to other people too.'

Ms. Rubino couldn’t pass a homeless person without giving money. One blustery winter day she gave a street person her scarf. 'She figured he needed it more than she did,' Mrs. Rubino said.

When her mother became seriously ill a few years ago, Ms. Rubino had to stop visiting her brother, Anthony, in Louisville, Ky.

'She thought of the family before she thought of herself,' Mr. Rubino said. 'That’s the most outstanding point I can make about Joanne.'

I only knew Joanne through phone conversations when we were preparing proposal responses for prospective clients. Her sweet & caring personality came through over the phone, though. I work in the Louisville/Mercer office and had heard she had family here that she was very close to. 19 years later, please know others are remembering her. God bless her.

As you know, Joanne, your mother Ann called me almost weekly for a couple of years after your passing. I was priviledged to paint your portrait and so your mother shared with me your greatness and kindness that was your life. Now as I remember that tragic day when people choose to treat others not as they wanted to be treated but without thought nor caring. I'm grateful that your life was one of kindness and thoughtfulness.

We met Joanne on her visits to Louisville, her brother & his family our neighbor. It was obvious through our brief encounters that Joanne put her family first ~ her Mother, Tony and his girls. She loved them dearly . . . An angel on earth and certainly a very special Angel today to all who had the good fortune to meet her. Bill & Sandy Beyerle

You never knew me Joanne, However I would like to explain. project 2996 has been set up for victims of 9/11 like youself....The aim is to ensure than people never ever forget, and always remember the innocent lives that were lost that day. When you sign up to project 2996 you are assigned a victim to research and remember. I like in Scotland and I am 25 years old. Was still in High school when this awful event happened. I will never ever forhet watching the events unfold and feeling so helpless. I want you to know Joanne, I lit a candle for you yesterday at mass. I pray you found peace. I knew Joanne through my friend Cherie - from Canarsie-I lived in Canarsie as well, only a few blocks from Joanne. We have been at mutual parties together through Cherie. She was such a sweet girl and I was so sad to hear that she died in this tragedy. May she rest in peace. Sheryl

I am a student at SUNY Potsdam. I have never met Joanne I participated in a human labyrinth yesterday as part of a tribute to all those we lost 9/11. Each person participating carried the name of someone who died as a result of the torrorist acts. I carried Joanne's name to the center of the labyrinth. The wooden pieces with the victims' names on them will be used to construct a memorial sculpture that will be displayed at SUNY Potsdam. I am proud to have carried Joanne's name into our labyrinth. I now think of her often and pray for her.

I worked with the Marsh & McLennan Cincinnat Office from 1975-1997 and talked to Joanne almost daily. Sometimes when she visited her brother in Louisville, Ky. she would stop and visit with me. Joanne had lots of love, not only for her family, but everyone she came in contact with. I'll miss her laughs (Joanne had a great sense of humor) and her hugs. I regret that I didn't stay in touch with her after leaving Marsh. God bless you, Joanne, as well as your family and friends. Until we meet again, Lynda

'Beans' Rubino and I go way back when I would visit the Accounting Office at 1221. She became 'Beans' Rubino who made me laugh out loud so many times - close to constantly. We joked about her after-Marsh activities, especially her 'police' duties and teased each other about our accents, especially hers. How I loved visiting 'Beans' and will miss her each and every time I have an accounting issue.
